Naples got its start as a winter retreat for the wealthy in 1886, when a group of savvy developers purchased 8,700 acres of shoreline laced with pearly beaches. The lots sold like hot cakes, and soon, rich notables of the era were building stately beach homes along the water. Within a few years Naples became a magnet for northern rich and famous-types looking to pass the winter in sunnier climes. Today, visitors can see the original settlement, dubbed “Millionaires Row,” in Olde Naples, where careful preservation has enabled most of the historic buildings to survive.
